SpaceX recently modified the historic Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center to accommodate their Falcon 9 rockets. One of the main considerations was how well the Falcon 9 rocket would be protected from lightning by the existing lightning protection system at LC-39A while on the pad in both the horizontal and vertical positions. SLS performed a detailed Monte Carlo risk assessment to determine the susceptibility of the Falcon 9 rocket to direct lightning strikes.
The SLS Team has many decades of lightning monitoring, lightning protection, and lightning testing experience. We apply state-of-the-art lightning research to engineering solutions.Request Information
