SLS recently relocated one of our Jupiter OLS high-speed video lightning surveillance systems to monitor Blue Origin’s Launch Complex 36 in support of a Space Force program to evaluate the performance of MERLIN, the Space Force’s lightning detection system, for lightning strikes to tall structures. The Jupiter OLS systems provide the ground-truth lightning strike point data for the MERLIN performance evaluation. The lightning protection system (designed by SLS) at SLC-36 is the tallest structure at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, reaching more than 600′ in height.
