Both new and existing facilities benefit from regular visual inspection and characterization of the installed lightning protection system. Typical characterization of a lightning protection system includes a thorough suite of bonding and ground-to-earth resistance measurements designed to highlight any deficiencies that could lessen the system’s ability to safely and quickly conduct lightning currents to ground. SLS performs visual inspections and grounding/bonding measurements of the lightning protection systems at customer facilities. Learn more about some of the recent lightning protection and grounding inspections conducted by SLS.
SLS performed bonding and ground-resistance measurements for the two existing down-conductors for the Launch Complex 39A lightning protection system. Later, SLS was tasked to perform a 360° scan of each of the 1100 ft down-conductors to inspect the aged cables for lightning damage or broken strands. To accomplish this challenging task, our mechanical design team developed a custom tethered trolley that traveled the length of each down-conductor while continuously recording high-resolution images using three rugged action cameras.
Learn MoreSLS evaluated the integrity of the Launch Complex 40 (LC-40) lightning protection system following the vehicle anomaly in September of 2016. Ground resistance measurements for the pad lightning protection system were performed.
Learn MoreSLS performed an inspection of the lightning protection system at Hangar AO at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station following Hurricane Matthew. In addition, ground resistance and bonding measurements were performed.
Learn MoreSouthern Power operates natural gas power plants across the southeastern United States. One of the largest capacity plants is Plant Franklin in Alabama. SLS performed extensive inspections of the Plant Franklin lightning protection and grounding systems.
Learn MoreSLS provided integral support for evaluating the lightning protection and grounding systems of a critical data center for the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency near Orlando, Florida.
Learn MoreThe multiple launch programs at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station utilize data from the new 50MHz wind profiler to evaluate upper level winds during launch countdowns.
Learn MoreA major payload processing facility at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station sustained damage due to Hurricane Matthew during the summer of 2016.
Learn MoreThe Tennessee Valley Authority’s Magnolia Combined Cycle Plant is a three-unit natural gas power plant located in Benton County, Mississippi. SLS was able to identify some potential lightning vulnerabilities and provide a series of detailed mitigation steps.
Learn MoreThe SLS Team has many decades of lightning monitoring, lightning protection, and lightning testing experience. We apply state-of-the-art lightning research to engineering solutions.
