National and international standards provide guidelines for the design and installation of lightning protection systems on basic structure geometries. For many complex structures, accepted standards do not provide sufficient guidance for designing and verifying effective lightning protection. SLS utilizes the proprietary Standards+ suite of innovative 3D software tools to design, test, and validate lightning protection systems for complex structures, facilities, and assets of any geometry. Learn more about some of our recent lightning protection design projects.
SLS Chief Technologist Dr. Carlos Mata was the Lead Design Engineer for the lightning protection system at NASA’s next-generation Launch Complex 39B (LC-39B) at the Kennedy Space Center.
Learn MoreLC-39A was previously home to the Apollo moon missions and many Space Shuttle flights. LC-39A is now being renovated to support launches of commercial vehicles and eventually, human-rated vehicles.
Learn MoreBlue Origin is a major player in the booming commercial spaceflight industry. Blue Origin recently leased Launch Complex 36, located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, from the United States Air Force.
Learn MoreSLS worked in conjunction with Modern Lightning Protection to evaluate the lightning protection system of a large Jumbotron video display at a major soccer stadium. Two lightning protection systems were evaluated and recommended to mitigate potential damage to the video display due to direct lightning strikes.
Learn MoreSLS worked in conjunction with Modern Lightning Protection to provide lightning protection design support for the Army Corps of Engineers Laser Device Project. SLS designed the lightning protection system to minimize the probability of a direct lightning attachment to the laser system.
Learn MoreA large wind turbine fabrication facility is located at the Port of Providence in Rhode Island. SLS worked with Northeast Lightning Protection to design both the lightning protection and grounding systems for the main wind turbine towers during their final assembly.
Learn MoreAltaeros Energies designs and manufactures innovative buoyant wind turbines. SLS was tasked by Altaeros to provide guidance on the lightning protection design for the buoyant wind turbines in addition to the associated umbilicals and ground stations.
Learn MoreSLS was tasked by AECOM and Space Florida to design a new lightning protection system (LPS) for the newly-renovated Launch Complex 46 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Learn MoreThe SLS Team has many decades of lightning monitoring, lightning protection, and lightning testing experience. We apply state-of-the-art lightning research to engineering solutions.
