The Tennessee Valley Authority’s Magnolia Combined Cycle Plant is a three-unit natural gas power plant located in Benton County, Mississippi.  The plant has nominal capacity of about 920 MW.  Recently, the plant has experienced some lightning-related issues that negatively impact operations.  TVA contracted with SLS to perform a thorough inspection and evaluation of the plant’s grounding system, lightning protection systems, instrumentation systems, and surge protection systems.  SLS conducted a full suite of bonding and grounding resistance measurements at the plant in addition to an array of visual inspections.  Based on these measurements and collected data, SLS was able to identify some potential lightning vulnerabilities and provide a series of detailed mitigation steps. TVA will be able to utilize the results of the study to reduce their downtime due to the lightning, saving time and money.
