SOUTHERN POWER PLANT FRANKLIN

Southern Power operates natural gas power plants across the southeastern United States. One of the largest capacity plants is Plant Franklin in Alabama. SLS performed extensive inspections of the Plant Franklin lightning protection and grounding systems. Ground resistance and bonding measurements were recorded for major infrastructure. In addition, SLS evaluated the ground resistivity at the power plant. Based on the measurements recorded by SLS, a detailed set of recommendations were drafted to improve the effectiveness of the lightning protection and grounding systems at Plant Franklin.

In addition to the inspections of the lightning protection and grounding systems, SLS also performed several lightning forensic investigations at the Plant Franklin natural gas power plant. The plant had experience repeated lightning-related damage to certain monitoring and power systems. Through detailed measurements, SLS was able to pinpoint the likely causes of these equipment failures. A series of recommendations were presented to Plant Franklin to mitigate the discovered issues.
